Distributed Energy in New York

Through the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), New York has set big renewable energy goals on its path to a zero-emission grid. Distributed solar – such as community solar – is no small part of achieving these ambitions, with 6,000 MW of distributed solar mandated in New York by 2025. To date, the NY-Sun distributed solar program has reached every county in the state and has supported more than 12,000 solar jobs.

In September 2021, Governor Hochul expanded the NY-Sun program to a goal of 10 GW of distributed solar by 2030. This expansion is expected to add an additional 6,000 jobs and provide at least 35% of benefits to disadvantaged communities by incentivizing solar installations in New York. The state is well positioned for solar growth and to build upon its success as a community solar market. Between the NY-Sun projects both operating and in development, in addition to the utility-scale solar projects under development in the state, solar will provide enough electricity to power more than 2.2 million homes and help ensure New York’s energy future.

Apex Clean Energy is seeking landowners interested in leasing their land for community solar projects and for larger transmission-connected solar projects.

Are you a landowner in New York?

You may be able to sign up for solar energy on your land.

  1. Let us know you're interested here.
  2. If your parcel is 40 acres or more, we'll investigate your property to ensure it is a suitable site for distributed solar. If your parcel is less than 40 acres, it might be too small to be eligible, but we're happy to hold onto your information in case there are new opportunities in the future.
  3. If your land is eligible, we will prepare a lease agreement for you to review.
  4. Once you've signed, we do the rest—from developing the site, to getting permits, to building the project, to selling the power that's produced.

The best part? You get paid the whole time.
